Magician Wanted
Walking down a street in Lower Manhattan I passed a magic shop. A large sign displayed in the window read: Magician Wanted with Not Much Experience Needed printed at the bottom.
It brought to mind the fact that artists are magicians. We take materials, objects – things that have less meaning by themselves and transform them into works that transcend the singularity as they travel from the eye, through the mind to the viewer’s soul.
‘Not Much Experience Needed’? Indeed ... experience is needed. Diligence, perseverance, faith and life experiences are necessary tools - a fearless willingness to gamble, play the game - the game of life and magically transform that challenge into art. These are all parts of the tricks of transformation the artist as magician employs.
As a painter, I have been playing this game for a long while; therefore, I am applying for the job!
